Li Jikai’s untitled work is a group of text slogans and banners collected online that were displayed in various parts of China at the beginning of the Covid-19 outbreak. The banners display a paradoxical interplay of governmental surveillance control and propaganda as well as a sense of linguistic humour and irony.

Selected banners translated by Jiaying (Coco) Li

Today you drop in everywhere, tomorrow pneumonia comes at you.

A mask or a ventilator, you gotta choose.

Gatherings are for courting death, new year’s greetings are for harming others.

People who come back from Hubei and don’t report are time bombs!

Isolate before returning home, family all loves you.

Today gather to chew the fat, tomorrow catch the virus and break up the family.

Bring illness back to the village, unfilial children!

Stay at home for more than ten days, be happy for decades.

Have a bite of game today, see you in the underworld tomorrow.
